Students have traditionally been underrepresented at election time. Many believe that young people do not vote because of apathy towards voting. However, recent studies have shown that the reason given by most young adults for not voting is that they did not have good information, including not knowing if they can vote where they go to school. Missing registration deadlines and not knowing how to get registered are other barriers to voting that students face. However, college campuses are one of the best places to reach young voters to give them information on how to register and what they need to have their votes counted on Election Day. College administrators can play a big role in helping students get registered - with little effort. As you know, the Higher Education Act (HEA) requires schools to give their "best effort" in providing students access to voter registration forms and information.
We invite you to learn more about how to comply with the HEA and how to help your students.

Providing service to students has grown outside of traditional bounds of times and formats for most campus administrators. With the increase in students' use of "social media" as a prime source of information, registrar's offices must consider its use as an essential tool. With an emphasis on building relationships and establishing conversations about policies, deadlines, and resources for student success, social media can help in student-service outreach which in the past was limited first to paper, then to email, and more recently to "passive" Web pages. Jeff von Munkwitz-Smith, Interim Vice President for Enrollment Planning and Management and University Registrar at the University of Connecticut, and Scott Dittman, University Registrar at Washington and Lee University, will discuss their experiences with implementing various social networking tools, including Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other social networking tools in a service environment. The presenters will share their own strategies, successes and limitations in developing their nascent initiatives and will answer questions during a live chat session at the end of the webinar.

Created by students at Stanford University, ClassOwl is a social academic platform made by students for students, professors, administration, and staff. Rather than having separate planners for school deadlines and social events, ClassOwl provides a single planner that allows students to follow their classes and student groups in one place. Everyone who is a member of a certain class or group will receive all the updates that any other member makes in that organization. No more missing out on social activities and course work deadlines. No more confusion about assignments. With ClassOwl, academic deadlines can be centralized, including them automatically for every student on campus. Students will then see these deadlines every time they check their daily planner, reinforcing their immediacy without the faculty, administration, or staff having to do anything. Administrators can also send out automatic reminders or message students when important deadlines are approaching. ClassOwl is here to simplify all aspects of academic life for the higher ed community. Plan to participate in this informative webinar moderated by Tom Black, Registrar at Stanford University.

Although institutions have started to adopt the cloud there is major concern among campus IT professionals over security, privacy and services issues. Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering information technology services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). There are many excellent reasons to consider the use of commercial cloud services, it can create a precarious situation where assurances of record protection can be extremely difficult.
Enrollment Managers and Student Records professionals are familiar with at least some of their core electronic services offered and delivered by a third party on the network. What are the legal and privacy issues as institutions adopt this model of "computing services as commodity" rather than services owned and managed locally? Register for AACRAO's webinar providing an introduction to Cloud Computing, followed by an in-depth discussion of the privacy, security and FERPA issues associated with entering these types of partnerships.

The development of iStanford, Stanford University's mobile interface, is a story about students and their indefatigable determination to excel and achieve. iStanford also is a story about challenging conventional wisdom and creating something beyond expectations: a new application paradigm, new approaches to thinking about information in corporate data bases, and new ways to brand institutions and connect with constituencies. Data from a student-led study show that the mobile phenomenon is a highly personal phenomenon and is here to stay.

On any given day across the United States, college or university representatives decide to admit an applicant or to transfer courses for credit. What these well-intended campus officials usually do not know is that the documents on which they base these decisions are forged. A fact: If you and your colleagues are not checking documentation for forgeries, then you can be absolutely sure that you have admitted an applicant or given academic transfer credit to an individual who tampered with his or her documentation. Although the potential for fraud is greater for international applications, altered documentation is not only an international problem.

Proposals to track postsecondary students through the creation of one or more longitudinal data systems have been around for about a decade. In 2004, the National Center for Education Statistics formally convened Technical Revue Panels to investigate the feasibility of creating a federal "unit-record" data system to replace a number of Integrated Postsecondary Data System's (IPEDS) aggregate surveys. The proposed system, however, was affirmatively banned in legislation to reauthorize the Higher Education Act.
