After Violence on Campus
After Violence on Campus: Issues for the Registrar – Faculty, student, registration and classroom issues
Listen to AACRAO's webinar from Wednesday August 6, 2008 to learn more about the effects of violence on college campuses.
After Virginia Tech and other incidents of mass violence, registrars need to cope with many tragic but foreseeable issues. Linda Pendergrass, Associate Registrar at The University of Texas at Austin, and her colleagues will discuss the following issues, and then invite discussion:
Faculty who died in the event: Will their classes be continued by another instructor? Will grades be assigned by the chair of the department? And other issues...
Student Registration issues: Will students be allowed to withdraw, with or without a refund, if they are too impacted by the event to continue for the semester? Should grades be assigned based on the grade earned at the time of the event? And other issues...
Classroom issues: If an entire classroom building needs to be closed for the remainder of the semester: a discussion of foreseeable issues.
Degree issues: Posthumous degrees – Should they be awarded to all students who died in the event? Or only to those nearing graduation?
Extending the semester: If so, this affects a variety of other events, including final exam scheduling, and other "downstream events."
Academic records: Should some permanent notation about the event be added to the student record of each student currently enrolled as an archive of the event?
