SEM for Graduate and Professional Schools: Achieving Optimal Enrollment in the Academic Context

Archive Available

OVERVIEW:

The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) recently reported that last year's graduate admission applications to U.S. colleges and universities increased by 4.3%. Conversely, CGS reported that for the second year in a row U.S. graduate enrollment (except health sciences) has declined. Now, more than ever, college and university graduate education leaders—namely provosts, deans, and program directors—are going down the path of embracing strategic enrollment management paradigms. In theory and practice, however, SEM has been largely modeled after structures, policies, and professional roles that are intrinsically associated with undergraduate education. This inter-association session is presented by two experienced AACRAO and NAGAP members who will discuss the similarities and distinctions of graduate-level SEM, in relation to undergraduate-focused SEM. Specific emphasis will be placed on the constituencies, structures, strategies, and tactics involved in developing and successfully implementing SEM for graduate and professional schools and programs.

Presenters:

Dave Fletcher, Senior Director of Graduate Admissions, Barry University
Education Chair, NAGAP Board of Directors

Dave is currently in his 15th year at Barry University in the Division of Enrollment Services which encompasses UG and Graduate admissions. He joined the Barry community when "admissions" was one seamless operation but in the last 10 years has overseen the growth and development of a separate graduate admissions operation, in collaboration with, but distinct from, the undergraduate operation. The Office of Graduate Admissions currently supports the admission and recruiting operation of 6 of the 10 divisions at Barry.

Before coming to Barry, Dave taught Spanish and Latin at the high school level in Florida for 13 years.

He has served three terms as the NAGAP treasurer and oversaw the process of moving NAGAP to professional management in 2006. He has twice served on the annual conference committee and currently serves NAGAP as Chair of the Education Committee. In 2011 he was the recipient of the NAGAP Distinguished Service Award.

Dave holds a B.A. in Philosophy, an M.A. in Guidance and Counseling, an M.A. in Theology and recently completed a D. Min. degree at Barry University. Dave is passionate about institutional mission and its bearing on the admission/enrollment operation at Barry.
