IT Leadership - Tune in to Your Potential, People and Political Climate Around You
(Cost: $75 Member/$95 Non-member)
Do you need to "tune up" or "tune in"? Tune in to your potential, people, and political climate around you. IT and organizational managers are expected to do everything right; but no one leader can be all things to all people. This session is not just about identifying strengths and weaknesses — it's about building leadership performance that combines personal competence, talent management and organizational savvy.
As IT professionals, both individually and collectively, we invariably possess the right "lyric" — the ability to find solutions. After all, that's what we are trained to do. But as projects become more complex and IT roles are distributed across the institution, we often have a hard time reaching our audience, the IT users. To them, our "tune" may sound off key and discordant; not in keeping with the expectations and outcomes they envision.
Presenter:
Jenny Cobb, Senior Strategist - Learning Organizations, JT Cobb Consulting
Check Your Financial Aid Status: A New Tool for Students
(Cost: $75 Member/$95 Non-member)
The University of Minnesota, Office of Student Finance, developed a web application for students to quickly and conveniently check the status of their financial aid from application to disbursement. Today's web-savvy students can get real time feedback 24-7. Six easy steps show at a glance where the student is in the process and what to do next. Each step is checked off when completed and the next step is highlighted.
By categorizing our entire business process as six simple steps, and by giving students real time feedback via the web as to where they are in the step process, we were able to decrease the amount of staffing time required to manage student contact. This web application has reduced the number of student questions and increased the understanding of the financial aid process, resulting in better customer service for U of MN students and their parents.
In this session I will explain the six steps and briefly describe the logic behind them. Your institution may be able to develop a similar application and save precious staff time by reducing requests for information via phone, e-mail, snail mail or walk-in.
Presenters:
Vicki Larson, Manager, One Stop Student Services, University of Minnesota
Ken Kiehm, Systems Analyst, Office of Student Finance, University of Minnesota
